Quang Ninh to host Vietnam Seas and Islands Week 2018
The annual Vietnam Seas and Islands Week 2018 will be held in Quang Ninh province in June in response to World Oceans Day (June 8).
This was announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. A gala night is slated for June 1 in Ha Long city of Quang Ninh province, including art performances and a seminar on youth’s role in sustainable development and protection of the country’s seas and islands sovereignty, along with the launch of a contest to compose songs for national seas and islands protection.
Meanwhile, the launching ceremony will be held on June 2 morning in Cam Pha city. The ceremony and concurrent activities in Truong Sa archipelago, Quang Ninh, Quang Tri and Bac Lieu provinces will be broadcast live. Major beach clean-ups will be carried out afterwards.
The Vietnam Sea and Islands Week aims to raise public awareness of the importance of seas and islands in national building and protection, encouraging organisations and individuals to take action to protect marine resources and the environment for the country’s growth and seas and islands sovereignty. Coastal and sea areas are expected to contribute 53 – 55% to national gross domestic product by 2020.
In addition, Quang Ninh province has made thorough preparations as host of the National Tourism Year 2018, planning at least 51 cultural, sports and tourism events. The activities will take place throughout the year under the theme of “Ha Long-Heritage, Wonder, Friendly Destination”. Highlights of the National Tourism Year 2018 will include the opening ceremony and Carnaval Ha Long 2018 in Ha Long city, which is scheduled for April 28.
Quang Ninh province hopes to welcome 12 million visitors in 2018, including five million foreigners, and earn VND22 trillion (US$968 million), according to Quang Ninh Department of Tourism.
In 2017, the province accommodated 9.87 million arrivals, including 4.28 million foreigners, up 18% and 23% year on year, respectively. The sector earned over VND 17.88 trillion (US$786.9 million), up 30% year on year, and contributed VND3.2 trillion (US$140.8 million) to the State budget, accounting for 11.9% of the local budget collection.
