Promoting Hanoi - Hongkong cooperation potential

On September 15, in the framework of the mission accompanying Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in his official visit to China, Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung met and worked with Ms. Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Secretary of the Hongkong Special Administrative Region.

According to the Hanoi Department of Foreign Affairs, at the meeting, the two sides have exchanged views on the socio-economic development of each party, as well as the promotion of economic and trade cooperation between Hanoi and Hongkong Special Administrative Region.

Ms. Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said Vietnam is now the 3rd largest trading partner of Hongkong in the ASEAN, Hanoi is the largest city in the world with a rich history and culture, the two parties have more potential ability to cooperate in various fields such as investment, trade, culture, tourism and infrastructure construction. Hongkong is also ready to share experience with Hanoi on the issues of urban management, public transport, training of human resources, including training ready forces of Hanoi firefighters in handling fire at the tall buildings.

Hanoi will prioritise cooperation with China’s Hongkong in the fields of trade, investment, culture, tourism and infrastructure building. Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung made the statement at a working session with Chief Secretary of the Hongkong Special Administrative Region Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, on September 15.

He suggested Hongkong share experience in urban management, development of small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and high-quality human resources training. Hanoi also hopes to increase exchanges and partnership with Hong Kong businesses, he said, adding that the city is taking drastic measures to improve administrative procedures and the investment environment to attract foreign investors into infrastructure development, urban railway, tourism and social welfares. He added that Hanoi is an attractive destination for overseas firms to explore win-win investment and cooperation opportunities.

Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said Vietnam is currently the third biggest trade partner of Hongkong among ASEAN member countries. She highlighted Hanoi as a big city in the world with rich history and culture, saying there is a plenty of room for the two sides to cooperate in trade, investment, culture, tourism and infrastructure. Hongkong is willing to share experience with Hanoi in urban management, public transport, and the training of human resources, especially in fire fighting.

Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung described Hongkong as an economic hub in the region and the world and a big economic partner of Vietnam. He noted that Hongkong companies are running 155 investment projects worth nearly 1.3 billion USD in Hanoi. Two-way trade surpassed 1.5 billion USD in 2015, he cited.

 expressed her pleasure to welcome the visit of Hanoi's delegation. Through these exchanges at the meeting, Ms. Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor believes this will be the basis for further boosted cooperation between Hanoi and Hongkong Special Administrative Region in the future , simultaneously, attracting the interest of Hongkong enterprises to invest in the Hanoi market .
