Pompeo thanks Vietnam for hosting Trump-Kim summit
The two top diplomats shared a range of strategic interests and a common desire to promote peace, security, and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
In talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh on February 26, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeoexpressed thanks to the Vietnamese side for hosting the second face-to-face meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“I want to thank you and your whole team and the Vietnamese people for hosting this summit as well,” the US Department of State quoted Pompeo as saying in a statement.
“You’ve done remarkable work. It’s a demonstration, I think, of the relationship between our two countries, and I look forward to our conversation today and then the meetings between our leaders tomorrow as well,” he noted.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has expressed his excitement of being back in Vietnam where he feels a warm welcome and true friendship.
“Vietnam is an increasingly close friend and partner of the United States” Pompeo tweeted during the visit to Vietnam starting on February 26.
After the meeting, he said that “we share a range of strategic interests and a common desire to promote peace, security, and a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
The two top diplomats have discussed different issues including global agendas and bilateral relations.
He expected that Vietnam would continue contributing to the denuclearization and sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Pompeo added he expected Vietnam to have more important role in the Indian and Pacific oceans.
In terms of bilateral ties, the two diplomats agreed to promote trade and cooperation in education, and hold more exchange visits to prepare for the 25th anniversary of normalized ties in 2020.
At the meeting, the two sides reiterated the stance on solving tension in the South China Sea by dialogues which are in line with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982 and soon signing of the Code of Conduct (COC) for the regional sea.
In the previous visit to Vietnam in July 2018, Pompeo met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
“The fact that we’re cooperating - and not fighting - is proof that when a country decides to create a brighter future for itself alongside the United States, we follow through on American promises,” Pompeo said during a trip to Hanoi in July 2018.
Last month, the US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink in a meeting with FM Minh said that Vietnam is the US’s leading trade partner in Southeast Asia and the bilateral cooperation remains vigorous. The ambassador said that a number of the US’s firms want to expand their business in Vietnam.
Currently, giant American corporations in Vietnam include Amazon, Cisco, Citibank, Coca-Cola, Google, Metlife, Pfizer and Agoda.
