António Guterres expressed his hope that Giang would continue making effective contributions to UN forums and activities in New York to promote multilateralism that is in line with the UN Charter and deepen the growing partnership between the UN and Vietnam.

The UN leader said Vietnam is a reliable partner of the UN and he personally has a very good impression on the leaders, country, and people of Vietnam. The country’s development achievements in recent years are typical examples of a developing country’s success.

He highly appreciated Vietnam’s ability to hold important positions at UN agencies, including as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2020-2021 and Vietnam’s participation in peacekeeping operations.

At the meeting, the Vietnamese ambassador pledged to actively contribute to the UN activities, especially Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate response, peacekeeping, and the UN future cooperation like Our Common Agenda (OCA). Of the issues, he stressed the importance of further cooperation between Vietnam and UN bodies and between ASEAN and UN.

Before his latest appointment, Giang, 45, served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Giang succeeds Dang Dinh Quy to begin his three-year term at the UN from mid-February 2022.

UN's Sustainable Development Goals are implemented in Vietnam.

Vietnam’s engagement in UN work

Vietnam has undergone a journey of 45 years since its admission to the United Nations. On Sept 20, 1977, Vietnam became the 149th member of the world’s largest international organization.

During the decades-long engagement, Vietnam was elected twice as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Vietnam has also participated in the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It has actively promoted UN reform initiatives to increase the effectiveness of UN operations at the national level.

The country has promoted multilateralism and respect for the UN Charter, international law, equal relations, development cooperation among nations, and rights to self-determination of all nations. At the same time, it has opposed acts of aggression and unilateral embargo in international relations.

It has taken special care to develop cooperation, disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, anti-terrorism, and assurance of human rights.

The UN and its partners in Vietnam are working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 17 interconnected and ambitious Goals which address the major development challenges faced by people in Vietnam and around the world.

SDGs are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the earth’s environment and climate, and ensure that people everywhere can enjoy peace and prosperity. These are the goals the UN is working on in Vietnam.
