National Tourism Year 2016 ends in Kien Giang

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the People`s Committee of Kien Giang province jointly organised a ceremony to close the National Tourism Year 2016 – Phu Quoc – the Mekong Delta, themed “Discovering the Southern Land”, in Phu Quoc island district on December 25.
In the National Tourism Year 2016 hosted by Kien Giang, an array of national and global-scale events were held in Mekong Delta cities and provinces and several localities across the country.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Kien Giang provincial People’s Committee Pham Vu Hong said during the year, the locality has attracted 15 tourism projects.
Particularly, the National Tourism Year 2016 has been a big opportunity for Phu Quoc to promote itself as a tourist paradise, attracting domestic and foreign investors. In 2016, the island had 244 valid investment projects with a combined capital of over 314 trillion VND (14 billion USD), according to the Phu Quoc Economic Zone Management Board. 
The  province welcomed over 5.4 million visitors, up 24 percent annually. Of them, over 319,200 are foreigners, a 31.4 percent increase from last year. 
Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Vu Duc Dam praised the efforts of the tourism sector, local authorities, mass organisations and local communities in improving tourism environment, contributing to the success of the National Tourism Year 2016. 
Revenues from tourism sector grew 18.6 percent while the annual number of foreign visitor arrivals surged over 26 percent to reach 10 million for the first time ever, the Deputy PM said. 
The National Tourism Year 2017, themed “Northwest Colours”, will be hosted by the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai.
The province of Lao Cai with the participation of other provinces in the region, while other provinces and cities nationwide such as Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hue, Danang, Can Tho and HCM City are to hold supporting activities for the national event. 
Deputy PM Dam expressed his hope that will National Tourism Year 2017 further push the country's tourism forward.
