The Hanoitimes - Vietnam aims to increase the number of people using mobile phone services to 90 percent of its population by 2015 and 95 percent by 2020.
According to the national strategy for telecommunications development, which has been approved by the Prime Minister, 40-45 percent of households will own a landline telephone and 40-45 percent of the population will use internet by 2015.
The telecommunications sector’s growth rate will be 1.2-1.5 higher than that of the GDP with its revenue reaching US$15-17 billion or 6-7 percent of GDP.
The sector has a plan to restructure the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Groups and the Military-run Viettel Telecom Group to improve their competitive capacity and ensure their operational efficiency.
Telecom businesses, especially State-owned enterprises, which do not operate effectively, will be reorganized through transfers, mergers and acquisitions into three or four groups to make the best use of telecommunications infrastructure facilities.
The sector will provide third-generation (3G) broadband services at any time as required by customers
