Ministry prepares plans to review local media industry

The Ministry of Information and Communications has decided not to grant permits for the establishment of new newspapers and other publications until after it holds a national review.
The country now has 838 publications, including 67 radio and television stations and 17,000 journalists.
In April, the ministry will provide a plan of the media in Viet Nam until 2020 after a review of newspapers and publications across the nation.
The moves have been made to provide greater control of shortcomings said to have been found in press activities, said Deputy Minister Truong Minh Tuan at a meeting early this week.
He said the quality of press was sometimes not up to standard, adding that several online newspapers were reporting news just to increase their popularity.
The minister also alleged that loose management at some publications was to blame for the situation. He claimed that some reporters and editors were not reporting the news truthfully.
Tuan said that under the review, the quality of newspapers and publications would be improved to better serve readers and viewers nation-wide.
According to Tuan, the programme noted that publications were required to be official mouthpieces of the Party, State-owned agencies, social organisations and the People's forum.
He said they were all required to operate under State management and regulations.
The Deputy Minister said the new programme was designed to make national journalism serve demands to build and protect the country and help it integrate into the international community.
