Meeting with Vietnamese leaders, Trump says thanks for hosting US-N.Korea summit

President Trump’s presence in Vietnam shows efforts which both Hanoi and Washington have made to boost the relationship.
US President Donald Trump has said thanks to Vietnam for hosting the summit between him and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as the involved parties try to accelrate the denuclearization process.

The US president paid a courtesy visit to Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Wednesday morning [February 27] before his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later in the evening.

Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong and his American guest presided over a signing ceremony of several commercial trade deals between their two aviation industries. Vietnamese airlines signed several deals with Boeing.

In the meeting with Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong, the two leaders talked about ways to strengthen the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership. They committed to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific with shared principles of respect for sovereignty, peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, and freedom of navigation and overflight.

They welcomed the growing commercial relationship between these two countries.

After the meeting with the Vietnamese president, Trump met Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. 

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said his country wanted to make sure US and North Korean leaders will have a productive summit. “For the peace of the world, for a connected and developed world, let’s shake hands. We shall develop together and contribute to global stability,” he was quoted by CNN as saying.

Trump and Vietnamese leaders have lavished praise upon each other, while key businesses from both countries have also signed memorandums of understanding worth in theory billions of dollars.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs boasted of the country’s “comprehensive partnership” with the US.
 
Trump and Phuc shared a working lunch in the Presidential Palace in Hanoi. 

According to CNN, the US president was served with several Hanoi-typical dishes like nem (deep fried Hanoi-style spring rolls with shrimp, pork, vermicelli and vegetables served with a side of sweet and sour fish sauce and red chillies), cha ca (grilled cod fish), and xoi (steamed sticky glutinous rice with shrimp wrapped in a lotus leaf), and a traditional Vietnamese dessert consisting of lotus seeds, longans, and white wood-ear mushrooms served warm and in a light sugary syrup.
