Two big laptop recalls have been reported just within the first four months of 2014. The previous years also witnessed similar cases.

The Japanese electronics group Sony on April 11 released a warning that recent buyers of Sony’s VAIO Fit 11A convertible laptop/tablet need to unplug their units immediately and keep a safe distance from them. In the recall notice, Sony said that some of the battery packs provided to it by a third party have faults which may cause the units to overheat and cause burns.

Sony Vietnam has also posted informed about the recall on its website, requesting purchasers to check the numbers on their computers to determine if the units are subjects to the recall.
The Vaio Fit 11A SVF11N16CGS with 11.6 inch screen is being sold in Vietnam for VND18.99 million.
Earlier, on March 27, Lenovo announced the recall of batteries designed for those models of the ThinkPad series which it launched onto the market from October 2010 to April 2011. Laptop models covered by the recall include the Edge 11, Edge 13, Edge 14 Series, T410, T420, T510, W510 Series, X100e, X120e, X200, X201 and X201s Series. Lenovo says there is a danger of overheating, leading to an explosion.
Lenovo said that 518 of these units were sold in Vietnam and need to be returned for battery replacement.
The Competition Administration Department, an arm of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, has also made some recommendations to Lenovo laptop owners: remove the battery, only turn on the laptops when the unit is plugged in, and contact Lenovo as soon as you discover your laptop is subject to the recall.
A series of laptop recall cases have taken place in Vietnam in the earlier years.
HP had to recall 85,000 laptop batteries worldwide in 2009 and 2010. The company ran into trouble again in 2011, when it had to collect the batteries of laptops turned out in the period from July 2007 to July 2008, for safety reasons. A large recall campaign was conducted for batteries of 32 product models amongst the HP Pavilion, Compaq Presario, HP and HP Compaq series .
An actual case of an HP laptop battery exploding in Vietnam did reportedly occur in HMC City in 2008. The battery of a seven month old HP 520 suddenly exploded in front of its owner and her son, who were uninjured.
The battery ejected from the laptop, caught on fire, and caused some damage to the surrounding area. According to the owner, the laptop was running on battery power at the time, and wasn’t plugged in.
