Illegal stairway removed in Trang An heritage site
The construction was forced to be dismantled due to its numerous violations in building and operation.
An illegal walkway in Trang An Complex has been removed completely after three months its violation was found.
“The dismantling hardly affects the heritage site,” said Vu Van Huan, head of the People’s Committee in Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh province. Local authorities have also taken responsibility and drawn lessons from the case, Huan added.
Last year, Trang An Tourism JSC cut into Cai Ha Mountain to build a 2,000-step stairway to the top of a mountain in the famous landscape complex known for its boat cave tours.
The company started the building process in mid-2017 and the site was completed after six months, despite the warnings from local authority and the Trang An Culture Tourism Site Management Board.
The act violated the Law on Cultural Heritage, as inspected and concluded by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in early March.
Inspectors also found other violations committed by Trang An Tourism, including using unqualified tour guides, untrained boat drivers, selling tickets without a permit and distributing DVDs promoting Trang An without a license.
The ministry also ordered related parties to stop as well as dismantle the illegal staircase. Trang An Tourism in late March offered to dismantle the construction itself.
The Trang An Landscape Complex is known for its limestone peaks and valleys, many of which are partly submerged and surrounded by almost vertical cliffs. It was listed among World Heritage sites by UNESCO on June 23, 2014. Following the recognition, Ninh Binh province has enjoyed rapid tourism development. In 2017, it received seven million tourists, three times higher than previously.
