Hoi An expands walking streets

From April 12th, 2017, Hoi An city expanded its pedestrian space to ease the overcrowding around some tourist attractions.

The expanded space includes the entire Tran Phu street, Nguyen Hue street from Tran Phu to Nguyen Hue – Phan Chau Trinh crossroads, the entire Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa street and a section in front of the square along Hoai River.
The hours remain unchanged: between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., between 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. in dry season and between 3 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. in rainy season. Previously, the pedestrian space in Hoi An already included Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Bach Dang, Nguyen Phuc Chu, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Hoang Van Thu and Le Loi streets.

Besides that, the city will kick off activities of culture and entertainment as folk games, food night market and art streets that are expected to attract more and more arrivals and develop tourist industry and economy for the city. Local officials hope that the added space will give pedestrians more to see and ease overcrowding around some attraction hotspots.

Since 2004, the pedestrian zone project, approved by the Hoi An People’s Committee, has been a unique tourism cultural product of the locality. It received the support of local people because of the actual benefit to the community, contributing to economic and tourism development of Hoi An.
Last year, travel site Lonely Planet dubbed Hoi An a global food paradise while American travel website TripAdvisor chose the town as one of the top 10 Asian food destinations in 2011. Hoi An attracted 2.3 million tourists last year, up more than 18 percent from 2015.
