Ho Chi Minh City wants to upgrade landmark pedestrian street

Nguyen Hue walking street will have more fountain areas, public toilets, trash cans, water stalls, street food area, etc.
Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong has assigned the city's Department of Planning and Architecture to propose a plan to upgrade Nguyen Hue walking street with more fountain areas and lighting system.

In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Architecture is requested to do more research to re-arrange the locations for sanitation, garbage, shopping, street cuisine, paking lots, etc to serve visitors during large-scale events.
The department is also asked to propose a plan to connect the walking street space with the park in front of Opera House and Le Loi street, Nguyen Hue street with Ton Duc Thang –Ham Nghi streets as well.
In addition, to prepare for the upgrading and repairing project, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has asked the management board of Nguyen Hue walking street to report on its activities over the past three years since the opening day.
Nguyen Hue Street became Vietnam's first walking avenue that is 670m in length and 64m in width. The street was built with an investment of VND430 billion (US$18.49 million).
Nguyen Hue walking street officially came into operation on April 29, 2015. As scheduled, on week days, vehicles are still allowed to run along Nguyen Hue street, but from 6:00 pm to 1:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays, all kinds of vehicles are banned. This site is the place to organize parades, meetings, street and flower festivals, exhibitions, culture and sports activities, art performances, etc.
Ho Chi Minh City attracted nearly 4.4 million foreign tourists in the first seven months of 2018, according to the city deparment of tourism. It is expected to receive 7.5 million foreign tourists this year.
In 2018, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism plans to complete a tourism development strategy which identifies key tourism products and markets to better serve the demands of both domestic and foreign visitors.
