Hanoi's Bat Trang ceramic village - the most typical craft village in Vietnam

The People`s Committee of Gia Lam district held a press conference on March 9 to announce Bat Trang Village Festival 2017 that is scheduled to take place from March 11-13 (the 14th to the 16th day of the second lunar month).

The Bat Trang Village Festival is dedicated to the pottery crafts. This is the occasion the villagers, the craftsmen to send their gratitude to the ancestors, the tutelary deities and wish for a more prosperous and happier life.
The traditional Bat Trang ceramic village in Gia Lam district, Hanoi, which has undergone 800 years of development, has affirmed its position and brand name in domestic and foreign markets.

In the village history dates back to the 10th century, when King Ly Cong Uan relocated the capital in Thang Long. With the establishment and development of the capital, many businessmen, crafters from many areas come to settle down here to work and trade. Bat Trang has gradually changed from a normal ceramic and pottery village into a famous ceramic and pottery centre until now.
Bat Trang ceramics are a pride of Hanoi. In 2011, the municipal People’s Committee approved a detailed plan to preserve and develop the craft village in connection with tourism development.
A market to introduce Bat Trang ceramic products was also established, helping to intensify craft village promotion. The market has become an ideal shopping destination for foreign visitors.

Thanks to a long-lasting history and development, the works of Bat Trang village have been accumulated with a lot of different special designs.
In 2016, the total revenue of Bat Trang village reached nearly 1,000 billion VND.

Moreover, Bat Trang ceramic village has become a popular destination for the young living in Hanoi to visit during weekends.
The village has also become famous among foreign tourists who want to understand more about the historical and traditional values in each handicraft product.
In recent years, the village has welcomed over 10,000 international tourists and more than 50,000 Vietnamese tourists per year. The Bat Trang village receives about 500 to 800 visitors per day, of which 100 to 150 international tourists.
The Bat Trang Village Festival festival is dedicated to the pottery crafts.
The Bat Trang Village festival will make a chance for visitors to discover different Vietnamese traditional games and activities such as Chinese chess contest, human chess and tug-of-war. The village festival involves water procession, ancestral tablet washing, a procession of ancestral tablet to the communal house to worship.
Mr.Le Xuan Pho, Chairman of Bat Trang Ceramic Village Association said that this year's festival will attract the participation of 13 other traditional villages with 150 handicraft products featured at the event.

At the upcoming festival, the artisans and skilled workers of the participated craft villages will introduce the most elite products to create a space of rural markets and ancient villages such as Bat Trang pottery, Van Phuc silk, Phung Xa weave and Xa Kieu incense.
The Vietnam Village Association is intending to build cultural tourism markets in Bat Trang village to boost development of craft villages.
