Hanoi serves as bridge towards world peace
Vietnam hopes to make its mark in the history of mankind as a country facilitating world peace in the 21st century, according to Nguyen Quoc Phong, former deputy editor-in-chief of Thanh Nien newspaper.
For twenty years, Hanoi has been the sole city in Asia to be recognized by the UNESCO as City for Peace, and now the capital is serving as a bridge towards peace and stability for the Korean Peninsula, and in a broader sense, for the world.
The decision to choose Hanoi – City for Peace as the venue for the second summit between the US and North Korea makes sense for many reasons.
Vietnam and North Korea have similarity in the political system, both countries have experienced wars at the cost of millions of people and understood deeply the sorrow of division.
Meanwhile for the US, Vietnam as its former foe has turned into a strategic partner. The relation of the two countries remains huge potential for further development towards a better future for the two countries.
Vietnam, after 30 years of economic reform, has now reaped benefits in various aspects.
Hospitality is a natural characteristic of the Vietnamese people. Moreover, Vietnam is privileged to be chosen by both the US and North Korea as a platform for these two countries to discuss a high-stake issue, at the same time, the event would present a valuable opportunity for Vietnam to promote its image to the world.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has visited potential sites for the meeting in person and requested security at the highest level, indicating strong desire from the host for a successful event.
In a short period of time, Vietnam had done tons of works in preparing for the summit, which has exceeded expectation of international friends.
The history of Vietnam, with many ups and downs, has shown that things could not be settled in one or two days. But the way both US and North Korea, and other parties involved are trying to accomplish has made us believe in a better future.
At least the world is now at ease after the US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agree to sit down for talk. Vietnam hoped to make its mark in the history of mankind as a country facilitating world peace in the 21st century.
