Anh Kiet - Oanh Huong 11:01, 2023/07/02
This is an important activity for the encouragement of underprivileged children and their zeal for learning.

The Fund for Hanoi Children on July 1 held a program to give gifts and scholarships to 200 children who have overcome difficulties and studied well in 2023.

According to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, Hanoi currently has more than 12,700 needy children and over 30,500 children in special circumstances. On the occasion of the action month for children in 2023, the Fund for Hanoi Children has given gifts and scholarships to more than 1,300 children in difficult and special circumstances, with a total budget of more than VND2.3 billion (US$97,519).

Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Hong Dan said this is the sixth year the program has been organized and nearly 1,200 children have benefited from the program.

"This activity is highly appreciated by the public, the media and especially Hanoi students for its significance in encouraging disadvantaged children and their learning spirit. We hope to continue and expand it in the coming years," Dan said.

He added that the children who benefit from the program can participate in entertainment activities, which also help them have a comfortable mind and positive thinking.

The children were very emotional when they received the scholarships and gifts, as they were praised and encouraged to make great efforts in their studies.

Nguyen Huong Giang, a ninth grader at Xuan La Secondary School in Bac Tu Liem District, who lives in a disadvantaged situation (her father has cancer and is unable to work, her mother is self-employed with a precarious income), told The Hanoi Times that despite the difficult circumstances, she continues to strive for good academic results and to help her parents with household chores.

"In the 2022 - 2023 school year, I won the title of good student. I feel very happy when Hanoi leaders give me gifts and scholarships, and I will use them to buy school supplies," Giang said.
