Hanoi: pilot Rapid Bus Transit to be soon deployed
By Tuan Minh 16:20, 2016/11/11
Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Quoc Hung has urged the Hanoi Transport and Services Corporation (Transerco) to prepare personnel, facilities and infrastructure for the trial run after December 15 for Bus Rapid Transit route in Hanoi.

Model of Bus Rapid Transit in Hanoi

The local Department of Transport joins hands with Transerco to create favourable conditions for Bus Rapid Transit operation, to ensure transport safety and convenience for passengers. The project is hoped to officially operate within the year.

The pilot route is from Kim Ma station in Ba Dinh district to Yen Nghia station in Ha Dong district through Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, Le Trong Tan, Tran Phu and Ba La streets. There are 21 bus stops on the 14.7 km route. Each bus has a capacity of 90 passengers.

It is expected to take a passenger 30 minutes for the whole route.

In April, the project of development of eight Bus Rapid Transit routes citywide was approved by the Prime Minister. According to the plan, buses still account for a major part of the transport market share of Hanoi’s public transport system.

The eight BRT routes stretch across more than 200km, covering the Kim Ma-Le Van Luong-Yen Nghia, Ngoc Hoi-Phu Xuyên and Son Dong-Ba Vi routes. The plan states that Bus Rapid Transit routes can be applied on several urban railway systems that have yet to be constructed, including the Phu Dong-Bat Trang-Hung Yen, Ung Hoa-Phu Xuyen and Son Tay-Hoa Lac-Xuan Mai routes.

The Bus Rapid Transit system can also be developed on some roads that have adequate conditions in terms of infrastructure, depending on traffic conditions in each period. Seven intercity bus stations will be built in the city’s central areas in the Ha Dong, Gia Lam, Thanh Tri and Dong Anh districts, as well as Dan Phuong, Quoc Oai and Soc Son districts, besides some others in the city’s satellite urban areas.

The Prime Minister also approved the upgrade of existing bus stations at My Dinh, Nuoc Ngam, Giap Bat, Gia Lam and Thuong Tin and the construction of Xuan Mai bus station. Three other bus stations are planned for construction in the middle-term period in the Hoang Mai, Tu Liem and Dong Anh districts.

The technical support project is expected to get underway between 2016 and 2020, including three components on integrated urban and transport planning, increased connectivity between other modes of transport and the Bus Rapid Transit system, and improved capacity of relevant units.
