Hanoi lake environment rehabilitated
Since 2016, Hanoi has succeeded in cleaning its lakes. However, many people are still concerned that lake pollution might repeat if the control of sewage is loosened.
Over 120 lakes have been cleaned
According to statistics of the Hanoi Drainage Company, up until now, 85 out of 122 lakes in the Hanoi area have been cleaned up. The 37 remaining are either under recovery projects or not found not contaminated. After the treatment, lake water is completely devoid of fetid smell. There are no organic pollutants left and signs of eutrophication are limited to the minimum amount. The technologies used to treat the lake water basically do not affect aquatic animals or plants.
The leader of the Waste Water Treatment Team of Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company, Bui Ngoc Uyen states that besides Redoxy-3C, the company also put aquaponic rafts afloat in 39 lakes and aeration machines in other 22 lakes to enhance water self-cleaning. It is expected that in the third quarter of 2017, the company will continue to place aquaponic rafts in an additional 17 lakes and aeration machines in 10 other ones. In the suburban area, 44 out of 85 lakes have been cleaned up. The 39 remaining are expected to be processed in the third quarter.
Talking to the reporter of the Economic and Urban Newspaper, Truong Thi Ha, an elderly from Cau Giay district could not conceal her joy: “Previously, there was a time I did not dare to go to Nghia Tan Lake to do exercise because the lake smells terrible, particularly in the evening when the sun went down. After the lake was cleaned and trash was picked up, the foul smell disappeared. Therefore, I can maintain my habit of walking around the lake in the morning and late afternoon without any unpleasant experience. The active roles of responsible agencies to thoroughly solve the pollution issue in the lakes show that the Hanoi People’s Committee has paid much attention to the people’s lives.”
Not only Ha but many people living around 120 lakes and ponds which undergo water treatment are also enthusiastic about the lake environment improvement program which has been implemented over time. However, many people insist that lake water maintenance needs to be conducted routinely , because Otherwise, some bacteria laden water has reappeared.
Strictly control pollutant sources
Many reasons are blamed for the Hanoi lake water pollution. Oils, fats and gases discharged from restaurants, hotels, petrol stations, processing zones, residential areas are polluting the nearby areas of the lakes. Since fat is insoluble in water and it also adheres strongly to other components, it will stick together and form large clusters. Furthermore, with no strict control of the situation, the water pollution becomes more severe. According to surveys, all lakes in Hanoi have been subjected to grease with the level of 0.5 to 2.5mg / liter (the national standard for surface water is 0.5mg per liter). Along with that, many people still dump trash directly into the lake or next to the banks.
Sharing about this issue, Bui Ngoc Uyen said, although the improvement and treatment of the lake pollution have achieved very positive results, but he and colleagues still worry about the reappearance of pollution in the lakes. "Currently, we maintain the cleaning of the lake periodically from 3 to 9 months, depending on the specific situation. During that time, if the sources of discharge are not strictly controlled, it is likely that the lake will be seriously polluted again . Besides, some reservoirs have large amount of sludge because many areas have not been cleaned regularly such as Kim Lien, Den Lu, Hoan Kiem, etc. The improvement and treatment of pollution of these lakes will be very demanding. Much time and effort will be needed. " Uyen said.
“After a time of treating effectively the pollution of over 120 lakes, the Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company has been collaborated with many other agencies and localities such as the Hanoi Capital High Command and South Tu Liem District People’s Committee to clean and reduce the pollution of lakes.” Phan Hoang Minh – the Vice President of Hanoi Water Services Company.
