Hanoi fosters ties with ASEAN counterparts

Hanoi delegation’s visit will contribute to strengthening the friendship and solidarity between the capital of Vietnam and ASEAN counterparts.
Hanoi expects to further promote friendly cooperation with the capitals and cities of ASEAN countries for joint socio-economic development and friendship, especially as Vietnam prepares to take on the chairmanship of the bloc in 2020. 

That was the goal of a working visit by a Hanoi high-ranking delegation to Myanmar, Brunei and Indonesia, led by Vice Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Dao Duc Toan from July 28 to August 8, 2019.

* During the visit to Myanmar on July 31, the delegation had a meeting with Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein.

At the meeting, Vice Secretary Dao Duc Toan expected that his delegation’s visit would contribute to strengthening the friendship and solidarity between the two countries in general and Hanoi and Yangon in particular; promoting exchanges and seeking opportunities for cooperation and development between the two sides.

Toan briefed the host on Hanoi's socio-economic performance, administrative structure and future development plans.

For his part, U Phyo Min Thein said Myanmar is currently amending laws to attract foreign investment and hoped to welcome more Vietnamese investors to Myanmar and specifically Yangon to seek cooperation opportunities.

Although Hanoi and Yangon or other Myanma cities have not conducted any joint project yet, the potential for collaboration between Hanoi and Myanmar’s major cities remains huge, U Phyo Min Thein stressed.

Thus, both sides agreed to exchange visits more regularly and discuss experience on the fields of mutual concern such as urban management and development, tourism, cultural heritage preservation, among others.

Besides, they vowed to exchange information on culture – tourism and business opportunities via the embassies of the two countries. 

* In Brunei, the Hanoi delegation had a working session with Chairman of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board of Brunei Haji Ali bin Mat Yassin on August 1.

Haji Ali bin Mat Yassin said the first and a special visit by a Hanoi delegation marked a milestone in the promotion of exchanges of between the two capitals of Vietnam and Brunei.

Haji Ali bin Mat Yassin briefed the guests about Brunei’s capital, its administrative structure and master plans with the vision to 2035.

Accordingly, Bandar Seri Begawan aims to develop into a city with high-quality education, one of the ten cities with the best living standards in the world, en route of becoming the top ten cities with the highest average income.

During its development, Bandar Seri Begawan’s authorities are willing to cooperate and share experiences with Hanoi, he said.

For his part, Vice Secretary Dao Duc Toan briefed the host on Hanoi’s socio-economic development with many outstanding achievements on all spheres, as well as numerous challenges the city faces in its development and urbanization.

Toan affirmed that the Brunei city’s experience in urban development will be a focus of bilateral cooperation in the future.
 
* In Indonesia, the delegation on August 6 paid a courtesy visit to Deputy Governor of Jakarta Sutanto Soehodho and discussed with him ways to boost friendly relations between Hanoi and the Indonesian capital city. 

At the meeting, the two sides expressed delight at the progress of bilateral ties since the signing of a memorandum of understanding on friendship in 2004.

The two capitals have carried out many specific and practical cooperation activities in economy, investment, culture and tourism, among other fields.

Regarding economic and trade cooperation, Hanoi’s leader appreciated Indonesian investors’ potential and operation in the city with remarkable projects, including Nam Thang Long Urban Area (Ciputra Hanoi) - the first synchronized urban development in the Vietnamese capital.

Sutanto Soehodho briefed the guests from Hanoi about current issues and challenges that Jakarta is facing, especially population management, infrastructure development, transport, health and environment.

Currently, Jakarta, which contributes 70% to Indonesia’s gross domestic product, faces numerous challenges regarding population growth, environment pollution, plastics waste and flooding, Soehodho added.

He expressed his desire to work with Hanoi and international partners to seek proper initiatives and policies to practically and effectively deal with the issued. 

Besides, Soehodho explained Jakarta's development orientations for smart city,  technology application in the city government’s workflow, especially in budget management.

The two sides discussed policies on urban planning, residential management, and educational development. 

* During the ASEAN tour, the Hanoi delegation also called at the Vietnamese embassies in Myanmar, Brunei and Indonesia. All the ambassadors expressed their willingness to partner with Hanoi to promote cooperation with ASEAN cities.
