Hanoi Capital to launch Action Month promoting Gender Equality
The Hanoi People’s Committee issues Plan 210/KH-UBND dated September 19 on launching Action Month for Gender Equality and Gender-based Violence Prevention and Control in 2017 in Hanoi.
Themed “Joining hands to stop violence against woman and girls”, the Action Month 2017 will be launched from November 15 to December 15. It aims to create a peak campaign, increase activities for gender equality, prevention and control of violence against woman and girls. The People’s Committee requests city’s departments, agencies, sectors, unions and associations, People’s Committees of districts, suburban districts and towns to prepare their plans, issue them and conduct activities during the Action Month.
According to actual conditions, the departments, agencies, sectors, unions and associations, People’s Committees of districts, suburban districts and towns will organize activities in response to the Action Month, such as conferences, launching ceremonies, art performances, roadshows, posters and banners at offices, schools, streets, public places, city centers and crowded areas.
Popularization will be conducted, focusing on theme, message and activities in framework of the Action Month on mass media of Hanoi, radios of districts, towns and communes. Communications products of gender equality, gender-based violence prevention and control will be released and spread. Furthermore, there will be dialogues, seminars, workshops, and music and sports exchanges. Featured and highlighted models in preventing, controlling violence against women and girls will be recognized and honored; resources will be mobilized for supporting violence victims, women and girls in difficult circumstances.
Inter-disciplinary inspection will be conducted during the Action Month, thus detecting difficulties and suggesting policies to prevent and control violence against woman and girls. Articles on implementation of the Action Month in agencies, departments, districts and towns will be publicized on websites of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs; the result of the activities will be reported to the Department by December 18.
This first-time programme seeks to call on people in the community, especially men and boys, to participate in preventing violence against women and girls. Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Trong Dam said that the policy of men and women enjoying equal rights has been pursued by the Vietnamese Party since its foundation in 1930 by late President Ho Chi Minh.
The completion of State laws and policies has brought certain outcomes in the field, he said, adding that more efforts are still needed to change the prejudice on the role and value of women as well as drive back any acts of gender-based violence.
“Women should increase their autonomy and determinedly and proactively get involved in all spheres of social life,” he said. He called on people to join efforts to build a healthy and equal society with no one left behind.
Chief Representative of UN Population Fund Astrid Bant welcomed the Vietnamese Government for approving the national action programme on gender equality between 2016 and 2020, and adopting the annual action month for gender equality and gender-based violence prevention, saying these reconfirmed the country’s strong commitments to addressing the pressing issue.
She encouraged Vietnamese men and boys to stand up to deal with gender inequality, injustice and violence against women and girls. During the launching ceremony, more than 300 youngsters danced in response to the campaign.
The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs will coordinate with relevant ministries and localities to hold policy dialogues and conduct inspections in the field while spreading the campaign’s message at schools, and sport, culture and art activities.
