Green tourism - important goal of “smoke-free industry”
The Green Tourism forum was part of the 2019 Vietnam International Travel Mart – Hanoi, which takes place in Hanoi from March 27 to 30.
Developing green tourism and green growth is an opportunity, a challenge and an important goal of sustainable development of the tourism industry, said Chairman of the Science and Training Committee under the Vietnam Tourism Association Nguyen Van Dinh at the Green Tourism forum on March 27.
The forum was part of the 2019 Vietnam International Travel Mart – Hanoi, which takes place in Hanoi from March 27 to 30.
Speaking at the forum, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Quang Tung affirmed that in recent years, the tourism sector has executed policies, strategies and plans towards developing tourism with professionalism, quality, sustainability and natural environment protection.
He hoped that Vietnam's tourism will have more products, services and destinations to meet the requirements of green tourism development, in line with the interests and needs of visitors in the future, at the same time, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam tourism.
According to the Director of the Institute for Tourism Research Development (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) Nguyen Anh Tuan, besides the potential of green tourism, Vietnam’ tourism is also facing many problems and needs solutions to overcome.
Firstly, in Vietnam, the awareness of green tourism development is insufficient, especially that of green tourism for the country's sustainable development. Secondly, the Vietnamese government has not applied any specific mechanism, policy or guideline for developing green tourism. Thirdly, the lack of financial issues and investment in green solutions is also a shortcoming.
Besides the achievements obtained in the process of building and developing green tourism, Chairman of the Science and Training Committee (VITA) Nguyen Van Dinh said that Vietnam still has to face with many problems. Firstly, tourism development is not associated with efficient exploitation of natural resources, the low efficiency of resources exploitation. Secondly, tourism development is not closely linked to environmental protection. Third, tourism development strategy does not envision climate change.
On his side, Head of Project Administration Unit of Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Vietnam Steven Schipani said that in the 2003 – 2019 period, ADB has four projects worth US$114 million to support Vietnam in promoting tourism, including improving infrastructure including roads, solid waste and wastewater management, tourist information centers; destination management capacity enhancement; regional tourism cooperation.
