The Hanoitimes - Green Growth is destined to be the growth engine for the future in Vietnam, according to the draft Strategy for green growth.
The objective of the strategy is to have a low-carbon economy.
Official statistics show that the country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions totaled 150.9 million tons CO2 in 2000. Sectors with highest GHG emissions rates are agriculture (43%), energy (35%), land use and industrialization.
The volume of CO2 emissions is estimated to increase to 500 million tons. Thus, the reduction of GHG emissions becomes a major criteria for socio-economic development.
Under the draft strategy, Vietnam expects to slash GHG emissions by 10-15% against 2010, improve the efficiency of natural resources, and stop environmental degradation.
By 2030, the country expects to reduce GHG emissions by 1.5-2% per year and by 2050 green energies and technologies will be widely used.
The draft strategy, jointly developed by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will be submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration no later than June 30.
