With a population of approximately 120,000 in Vietnam's Quang Nam province, Hoi An was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. One of its major attractions is the Hoi An Lantern Full Moon Festival that takes place every full moon cycle.
Hoi An Lantern Full Moon Festival is a celebration to honor the ancestors. During the festival, people exchange flowers, lanterns, candles and fruits to wish for growth, prosperity and good fortune for each other. Hoi An is globally known as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port dating from the 15th to 19th century.
Earlier, Hoi An in Quang Nam province was named the world’s best city of 2019 by the New York-based Travel + Leisure magazine. In an article with theme “Hoi An Is the Best City in the World — and the Street Food Is Only the Beginning”, the ancient city was described as a charming town with ancient roots, distinct architecture, a contagious energy, and arguably one of the best street food scenes on the planet.
Hoi An is home to friendly people who are eager to share the best that their city has to offer. The highlight of Hoi An is definitely its vibrant food scene, where there are a lot of restaurants that might just do one thing, but they do it perfectly.
Travel + Leisure also suggests its reader to check out a cooking class to learn the ins and outs of Vietnamese cooking and join a sunrise fish market tour, during which visitors will hop on a boat and sail out to watch the night ships return with their catch to deliver to the fisherman's wives waiting at a wholesale fish market.
In 2018, Hoi An welcomed five million visitors, a 50.84% increase from the previous year, including 3.7 million foreigners, according to Quang Nam province Department of Tourism.
