"Golden Steering Wheel" Awards 2020 presented to 50 individuals and 17 collectives in Vietnam

The National Road Safety Committee held the "Golden Steering Wheel" Awards 2020 ceremony in Hanoi on December 27 to honor good conduct drivers and transport businesses.

This is an annual award organized by the National Traffic Safety Committee to commend drivers and transport businesses for their efforts in ensuring traffic safety, raising awareness on road safety, traffic law compliance and traffic accidents prevention among the people, especially the drivers.

The "Golden Steering Wheel" Award plays an important role in shaping traffic culture and conducting communication on it, said Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The.
"Tens of millions of trips are safely made along with millions of tons of goods transported daily, have made important contributions to the national economic growth as well as cultural and social development,” Mr. The added.

For such of the achievement to be possible, there are contributions of thousands of transport businesses and millions of drivers who are keeping good maintenance of their cars, driving responsibly, being ready to give way for the safety of the other drivers. They were also actively participating in road safety campaigns such as "Safety Drive First", "For A Peaceful Road" and "Happy Trips".

During the last year, more than 14,000 traffic accidents occurred nationwide, killing 6,700 people and injuring more than 10,000 others, a decrease by more than 3,000 accidents, nearly 1,000 deaths, and more than 2,800 injuries compared to 2019. In which, the number of traffic-related deaths has fallen to the lowest level in the past 10 years to less than 7,000, according to Mr. The.

The National Traffic Safety Committee has chosen the topic of "Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement to ensure traffic safety and order" for the traffic safety communication in 2021. For next year, the committee aims at reducing the number of traffic accidents by 5-10%, including traffic – related death and traffic accidents, compared to 2020.

On this occasion, Minister Nguyen Van The has also launched the movements to build up the "Safe Transport Enterprise", "Safe Driving" and the 9th "Golden Steering Wheel" Awards in 2021.
