First 5G call piloted in Vietnam
Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung stressed that this event marked Vietnam as one of the few countries in the world that has successfully piloted the 5G technology, after the US, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
Hanoi-based Telecom Industry Group (Viettel) piloted the first call on fifth-generation (5G) mobile network in Vietnam on May 10.
At the event, the speed of Viettel's 5G mobile network connection with the terminal reached 1.5-1.7Gbps - far exceeding the theoretical limit of 4G LTE network, equivalent to the speed of commercial optical cable. A Viettel representative said the group will expand the 5G trial in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
A Viettel leader said that the group is building many 5G rate plans when the network is put into commercial operation.

Vietnam wants to develop ICT, so that Vietnamese people and businesses can compete in the global economy and that's why it is necessary to deploy 5G early, Hung explained.
He once affirmed that 5G is an opportunity for Vietnam to improve its competitiveness rankings in the world. Vietnam will test 5G in 2019 and put it into commercial use in 2020.
Sweden's Ericsson is a partner with Viettel in piloting 5G network, which aims to help the Ministry of Information and Communications comprehensively evaluate 5G technology based on several criteria including coverage, capacity, maximum speed and compatibility between 5G device and modern infrastructure.
