Expectation for a Hanoi clean, green and beautiful
Nguyen Tung - Tran Ha 16:20, 2017/09/13
Sustainable solution for garbage and solid waste treatment, avoiding the situation of garbage overwhelmed in residential areas, or a clear site to become a garbage dumping place in short time, which causes environmental pollution.
It is an urgent task for the city, which has been discussed many times. At the meeting of Hanoi People’s Council in September 12, this issue once again has been discussed to find the appropriate solutions.

Recently, with the objective to improve the living quality of Hanoians, the city has implemented solutions for garbage treatment, from decentralized management, transparent bidding process, to apply mechanism in garbage collection. All efforts are aimed toward the objective of a Hanoi clean, green and beautiful. However, there remains challenges in the process of garbage collection and treatment. According to statistics from administrative agencies, everyday, Hanoi produced 5,400 tons of solid waste, of which the majority are treated by burying underground with obsolete technologies. The situation of overloaded buried grounds has been mentioned, not to mention the habit of people dumping garbage wherever they want, or dumping garbage in prohibited zone.

Representatives of Hanoi People’s Council put it, if the city does not put effort investing in garbage treatment project, the problem will not be solved permanently. As such, Hanoi leaders said, the objective of Hanoi is to call for investment and apply modern technologies in garbage treatment, with a view to turn garbage into green energy. In reality, Hanoi has put effort in garbage treatment and turn them into useful products. The Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung informed, after the investment promotion event 2016, there has been 36 investors from Vietnam and abroad sending their profiles and expressing interest in waste treatment plant of the city. Hanoi has developed 12 criteria to choose investor, in which the technology must be environmental friendly with no carbon dioxin emission. As such, Hanoi has completed the process of choosing investor for Nam Son garbage treatment, it is expected the project is commenced before October 10 and with the estimated capacity in phase 1 reaching 2,000 ton of garbage treated each day, using technology of European standard.

For the construction waste, the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said, at present, some enterprises have imported specialized machines to turn these construction waste into sand. Hanoi has chosen locations in Hoang Mai, Thanh Tri, Gia Lam, and Dong Anh as potential destination to commence project. As such, waste of all kinds will no longer be put away but becoming useful products.

It is safe to say, despite much works to do, but with the determination and awareness of Hanoi leaders and the community, many hopes in a near future, garbage and solid waste in Hanoi will be treated effectively and turned into green energy or useful products, with an aim of transforming Hanoi into a green, clean and beautiful city.
