Dutch Queen: Comprehensive financial system is important to sustainable development

At a working session with Queen of the Netherland Maxima Zorreguieta Cerruti in Hanoi on June 1, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung made the statement that a national strategy on an inclusive financial system is needed to promote socio-economic sustainable development in Vietnam.
The Minister said Vietnam has gained significant achievements in poverty reduction thanks to the implementation of policies on social welfares, micro-financial development, and rural-agricultural credits.

Queen Maxima congratulated Vietnam on its accomplishments in poverty reduction and socio-economic development over the past 30 years. She agreed that the building of a national strategy on inclusive finance is important to boost the country’s sustainable development.

In the context of globalization and international integration, the United Nation has been interested in promoting the implementation of inclusive financial policies in member nations to ensure vulnerable groups will receive support to overcome financial difficulties, she added.

** The same day, Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue greeted Queen of the Netherlands Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti who is the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development.

Via the visit, the Queen hoped to cement and deepen the bilateral ties and share information, experience and strategic vision on the promulgation and enforcement of financial policies. Queen Maxima praised significant achievements which Vietnam attained in economic development, and the enforcement of poverty reduction policies. These are effective lessons for other countries in the world.

The guest revealed that during the visit, she has discussed with different Vietnamese agencies strategic issues related to inclusive finance, with a focus on microcredit policies and assistance towards the growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The high rate of mobile phone subscribers in Vietnam is a favorable technological condition for the country to increase its capacity in running the system for low-income and underserved people, the Queen added.

In reply, Deputy PM Hue applauded the evaluation and assessment of Queen Maxima. Viet Nam, said the host leader, clearly acknowledged three pillars of growth, namely economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The comprehensive growth was passed and added to the agenda of APEC 2017 ministerial-level meetings.  

According to Deputy PM Hue, Vietnam has carried out a range of inclusive-finance-related policies in helping farmers, SMEs and students access bank loans. Vietnam, however, still needs to build a national strategy on inclusive finance, Mr. Hue said.  

He recommended the Queen as a representative of the Netherlands and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development mobilize financial and technical resources from the UN and other international organizations to support Vietnam to effectively implement inclusive finance

However, a remarkable proportion of locals have yet been able to gain official access to financial and banking services, especially those in remote areas, he noted. Dung said his ministry will chair a high-level policy dialogue on women and economy in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue in September as part of the APEC Year 2017.

He invited the Queen to participate in the event, which will make valuable contributions to the country’s efforts in narrowing the gender gap in the digital world. Queen Maxima congratulated Vietnam on its accomplishments in poverty reduction and socio-economic development over the past 30 years.
