Hanoi City
Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the country's second largest city by population. Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts and 7 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction. The population in 2015 was estimated at 7.7 million people. From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political center of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Hue, the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945), but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and it became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War.
The city lies on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is 1,760 km (1,090 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City and 120 km (75 mi) west of Hai Phong city. October 2010 officially marked 1000 years since the establishment of the city. The Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural is a 4 km ceramic mosaic mural created to mark the occasion.
Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh Province
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular travel destination in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam. Administratively, the bay belongs to Ha Long City, Cam Pha town, and is a part of Van Don District. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes. Ha Long Bay is a center of a larger zone which includes Bai Tu Long Bay to the northeast, and Cat Ba Island to the southwest. These larger zones share a similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate and cultural characters.
Hạ Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 km2, including 1,960 – 2,000 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334 km2 with a high density of 775 islets. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem. Ha Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species and 60 endemic faunal species.
Da Nang City
Da Nang is the fourth largest city in Vietnam after Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in terms of urbanization and economic and one of the major port cities, in addition to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Hai Phong. Situated on the coast of the South China Sea, at the opening end of the Han River, it is the biggest city in Central Vietnam. It is governed as one of the five direct-controlled municipalities of the SRV and is thus under direct administration of the central government.
Da Nang is the commercial and educational center of Central Vietnam, with a well-sheltered, easily accessible port; its location on the path of National Route 1A and the North–South Railway makes it a hub for transportation. It is located within 100 km of several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Imperial City of Hue, the Old Town of Hoi An, and the My Son ruins. The city was previously known as Cua Han during early Dai Viet settlement, and as Tourane during French colonial rule. Before 1997, the city was part of Quang Nam - Da Nang Province.
On 1 January 1997, Da Nang was separated from Quang Nam Province to become one of four independent (centrally controlled) municipalities in Vietnam. Da Nang is listed as a first class city, and has a higher urbanization ratio than any of Vietnam's other provinces or centrally governed cities.
Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City formerly named and still informally known as Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam by population. It was once known as Prey Nokor prior to annexation by the Vietnamese in the 17th century. Under the name Saigon, it was the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina and later of the independent republic of South Vietnam 1955 – 75. On 2 July 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding Gia Dinh Province and was officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City after revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh (although the name Sai Gon is still widely used).
The metropolitan area, which consists of the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area, Thu Dau Mot, Bien Hoa, Vung Tau, Di An, Thuan An and surrounding towns, is populated by about 10 million people, making it the most populous metropolitan area in Vietnam. The city's population is expected to grow to 13.9 million by 2025.
The Ho Chi Minh City Metropolitan Area, a metropolitan area covering most parts of the southeast region plus Tien Giang Province and Long An Province under planning, will have an area of 30,000 square kilometers (12,000 sq mi) with a population of 20 million inhabitants by 2020.
Hue City
Hue is a city in central Vietnam that was the seat of Nguyen Dynasty emperors and the national capital from 1802–1945. A major attraction is its vast, 19th-century Citadel, surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls.
It encompasses the Imperial City, with palaces and shrines; the Forbidden Purple City, once the emperor's home; and a replica of the Royal Theater.
Sa Pa, Lao Cai Province
Sa Pa is a frontier township and capital of Sa Pa District in Lao Cai Province in northwest Vietnam. It is one of the main market towns in the area, where several ethnic minority groups such as Hmong, Dao (Yao), Giay, Pho Lu, and Tay live.
Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province
Nha Trang is a coastal city and capital of Khanh Hoa Province, on the South Central Coast of Vietnam. It is bounded on the north by Ninh Hoa district, on the south by Cam Ranh town and on the west by Dien Khanh District. The city has about 392,000 inhabitants, a number that is projected to increase to 560,000 by 2015 and 630,000 inhabitants by 2025. An area of 12.87 square kilometers (4.97 sq mi) of the western communes of Dien An and Dien Toàn is planned to be merged into Nha Trang which will make its new area 265.47 square kilometers (102.50 sq mi) based on the approval of the Prime Minister of Vietnam in September 2012.
Nha Trang is well known for its beaches and scuba diving and has developed into a popular destination for international tourists, attracting large numbers of backpackers, as well as more affluent travelers on the south-east Asia circuit; it is already very popular with Vietnamese tourists, with Nha Trang Bay widely considered as among the world's most beautiful bays.
Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province
Da Lat is the capital of Lam Dong Province in Vietnam. The city is located 1,500 m (4,900 ft) above sea level on the Langbian Plateau in the southern parts of the Central Highlands region. In Vietnam, Da Lat is a popular tourist destination.

Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province
Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam. Phu Quoc and nearby islands, along with distant Tho Chu Islands, is part of Kien Giang Province as Phu Quoc District, the island has a total area of 574 square kilometers (222 sq mi) and a permanent population of approximately 103,000. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, the district of Phu Quoc includes the island proper and 21 smaller islets. Duong Dong town is located on the west coast and is also the administrative and largest town on the island. The other township is An Thoi in the southern tip of the island. The economy is centered on fishing, agriculture and a fast-growing tourism sector. With tourist boom in decades, Phu Quoc has achieved fast economic growth. Many infrastructure projects have been carried out including some five-star hotels and resorts. Phu Quoc International Airport is the hub connecting Phu Quoc with mainland Vietnam and other international destinations.
By 2017, the government of Vietnam is planning to set up a Special Administrative Region which covers Phu Quoc Island and peripheral islets and so far upgrades it to a provincial city with the special administration.
