Inclusive innovation will help the country develop faster and in a more sustainable way to catch up with other nations in the world.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, who is also Head of the Steering Committee for Inclusive Innovation Project towards low-income people, shared his views with hundreds of scholars, economists and business representative at the 2014 Inclusive Innovation Forum held in Hanoi on November 26.
Co-organised by the Ministry of Planning and Investment and World Bank in Vietnam, the event gathered over 300 delegates, representing domestic and foreign organisations, institutes and businesses that have provided funding and technical assistance to inclusive innovation activities towards low-income people in Vietnam.
The innovation process started in the 1980s has not only helped Vietnam maintain the world's second highest growth rate for more than 20 consecutive years but also primarily benefits poor and low-income people . In addition to enjoying an average growth rate of 7% per year, the improvement of life and income for the poor has reached over 9%, helping Vietnam achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
However, these achievements do not deny the fact that the country still lags behind in comparison with some nations in the region such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Deputy PM Dam raised the question on how to make Vietnam develop faster and in a more sustainable way. A nation with a strong innovation system can move faster on a sustainable development path and bring about benefits for itself and its partners, he stressed.
The leader appreciated the contributions of international organisations, agencies and individuals in fostering innovation and creativity in people with low incomes in Vietnam. Despite per capita income having increased to US$2,960 in 2013, Vietnam still has over 1.8 million poor households and 2.4 million near-poor ones. Therefore, hunger eradication and poverty reduction remains an important goal of the Party and State.
Globalisation forces every nation to rise to its feet instead of lagging behind, Dam said, adding that it is vital to initiate creativity in all aspects of social life with the participation of the government, businesses and the whole community. He affirmed that the Government always supports and encourages innovation and creativity and expects that innovative ideas and creativity will constitute feasible and high potential trade.
According to the WB Country Director for Vietnam, Victoria Kwakwa, innovative measures for low-income people play an important role in reducing the gap between the rich and the poor in many countries such as Brazil, China, and India. She said the commercialisation of innovative ideas could provide the poor gain easier access to new technologies for rapid and sustainable means to escape poverty.
At the forum, participants held talks to exchange information and experience on innovation and enhancing networking with potential partners to support small and medium-sized businesses, research institutes, universities and individuals in researching, innovating technology, and commercialising application.
On the sidelines of the forum, an exhibition on the same theme was organised with the participation of 40 organisations and businesses. The exhibit features more than 50 products and technology applications, helping organisations and businesses introduce their research results and application of innovative technologies towards low-income people, and seek opportunities for collaboration with potential investors.
