A safe destination

After 20 years of being granted the title “City for Peace” by UNESCO, Hanoi has witnessed its tourism thrive with impressive numbers of international arrivals.

If in 2000, the city welcomed merely 50,000 foreign visitors, by 2010, the figure leaped to 1.7 million as the city celebrated its 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and 3 million for the first time in 2014.

Especially, the number of foreign travelers to Hanoi reached 5 million in 2017 and 6 million in 2018, helping the city achieve the goal two years ahead of time, exceeding the proposed target by 10.5%.

The growth pace was maintained during the first six months of 2019 as Vietnam's capital attracted 3.3 million overseas tourists, up 10.6% year-on-year.

According to some travel companies, the title “City for Peace” has created many opportunities for them to introduce and promote Hanoi as a safe destination for holidaymakers overseas.

Beautiful pictures of peaceful Hanoi

Hanoi has bewitched a large number of expatriates and even notorious foreign leaders, which has made it worthy of  the “City for Peace” title. The snapshots of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard jogging around Hoan Kiem Lake in early morning during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2006, German Deputy Prime Minister Sigmar Gabriel wandering around the St. Joseph's Cathedral or “Big Church” in 2014, former US’s President Barack Obama eating Bun Cha at a dining in 2016 or Argentinean President Mauricio Macri enjoying coffee at a small vendor in 2019 went viral around the world via social media. The events have enhanced Hanoi’s reputation as a peaceful space, an open, hospitable and charming city.

In 2018, Hanoi was voted as the 12th among 25 best destinations in the world and was one out of two cities of Vietnam ranked the “hottest” place in the number of tourist reservations in 2018.

Hanoi was also listed one of 17 nominees for the category of "World's Leading City Destination 2018” by the World Travel Awards.

Besides several attractive downtown vestiges namely the Old Quarter, Thang Long Citadel, Ngoc Son Temple, Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam or Temple of Literature, and some peripheral craft villages, foreign visitors are also charmed by the variety of local traditional dishes, representative of a rich and diverse culinary culture.
