Ambassadors, diplomats find Vietnam traditional puppetry impressive
"This is not just about art for children", Russian Ambassador Konstantin V. Vnukov shared during the "2018 Spring Friendship Journey".
The annual "2018 Spring Friendship Journey" by the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations (HAUFO) and Hanoi Tourism Department in coordination with Dong Anh District People's Committee left much impressions for the diplomats, ambassadors.
This year, more than 400 delegates attending the journey have visited the Co Loa Relic and Dao Thuc water puppetry village in Dong Anh district, Hanoi. Most of them find the Vietnamese traditional art breathtaking, following their trip to the ancient relic.
"Visiting Co Loa Citadel is one of the most memorable experiences of Vietnamese life in small villages as well as the rich history of Vietnam. The serene and peaceful atmosphere here is great," said Graham, an Australian delegate participating in the program. Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Konstantin V. Vnukov shared with Hanoitimes: "This is my first visit to Co Loa Citadel. I am very grateful to the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations for giving diplomats and foreigners like us the opportunity to understand more about the history of Vietnam.", added the Ambassador.
Ambassador Konstantin V. Vnukov said that although he had watched water puppet show many times during his time in Hanoi, this experience at Dao Thuc village’s water theater impressed him the most. "This is not just about art for children. Performances within the show such as the farmers’ farming and fishing reflecting Vietnamese farmers’ life through beautiful and easy-to-understand dances," the Ambassador shared.
The program also gave Etienne Rolland-Piegue, Counselor for Cultural and Cooperative Affairs of the French Embassy, director of the French Institute in Vietnam, an opportunity to experience the art of water puppetry for the first time in the past 6 months in Vietnam. "The simulation of the farmers’ daily life together with the appearance of fantasy characters like dragon, phoenix is really new to me, helping me understand more about the village culture, the spiritual life and the people of Vietnam,” Etienne Rolland-Piegue told Hanoitimes.
Nguyen The Nghi - Head of the traditional water puppetry artist group in Dao Thuc village said that, with merely 30 minutes in this spring program, it was impossible to show off the special characteristics of this art, so the artists chose the brief performances that portray the typical rural life and contemporary culture. So far, the village has about 50 puppetry artists, the oldest ones are more than 80, the youngest in their 20s. The artists expect that the value of this art shall be preserved, especially be broadly introduced to the international community.
Spring Friendship Journey has become an annual meaningful event that helps introduce to international friends the historic sites and traditional villages of Vietnam and Hanoi, according to Nguyen Lan Huong - Member of the Standing Committee, Head of the People Mobilization Committee of Hanoi Party Committee, Chairman of Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations.
Highly appreciating the Union’s role in the past time, Jorge Rondon Uzcategui, Head of the Diplomatic Mission, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Venezuela to Vietnam, believed that these peaceful and friendly activities had contributed, are contributing and will contribute to Vietnam’s better future and worthy position in the hearts of international friends.
