Panorama paintings show “The Battle of Dien Bien Phu”

Considered as the largest panorama oil painting project in Southeast Asia, “The Battle of Dien Bien Phu”, on display at Dien Bien Victory Museum promises to be an interesting highlight for visitors to Dien Bien.

The extravaganza panoramic painting titled “The Battle of Dien Bien Phu” is on the last stage of creation and will officially be showcased to people in the northern mountain of Dien Bien in 2022. 

With a total investment of VND40 billion. (US$1.7 million), the artwork is the first 360-degree painting on history in Vietnam, praising the illustrious Dien Bien victory over the French troops in 1954.

The painting is 132 meters long and 20.5 meter high. The total area of the canvas is more than 3,000 square meters.

“The Battle of Dien Bien Phu” was conceptualized in 2014 and painting started in 2019. It has been 80% completed at the moment.

Once to be completed, the painting will be displayed as the centerpiece within a giant installation reenacting the battle field with some trenches, bomb shelters and army camps.

In order to provide the ‘real’ feeling to the visitors, light and sound effects will also be added. 

The extraordinary oil on canvas painting features 4.500 characters and is divided into four scenes entitled “All people to Join the Battle”; “The Doughty Prelude”; “The Historical Confrontation”; and “The Victory of Dien Bien Phu Battle”.

The battle of Dien Bien Phu - culminating confrontation of the First Indochina War that took place between 13 March and 7 May 1954. It was fought between the French troops and Viet Minh communist revolutionaries. 

The 55 day-and-night fights marked a milestone that forced France to sign 1954 Geneva Accords and ended the war in Indochina.    
“The Dien Bien Phu Battlefield” installation is set up to pay tribute to Vietnamese heroes and martyrs, thereby contributing to preserving and promoting the Dien Bien Phu battlefield relic. 
Although it is still in the process of completion, the project has attracted quite a few people to visit.
