Puppetry lovers in Hanoi will have a chance to enjoy a `Classic Public Performance` by Youkiza Marionette Theatre from Tokyo, Japan, in a special programme scheduled to be held from March 21-23.
The program is supported by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam in co-ordination with Youth Theatre and Vietnam Puppet Theatre.
The performances which are opened free for public audience (on a first come, first served basis) will be conducted at Vietnam Puppet Theatre, 361 Truong Chinh, Thanh Xuan District.
Founded in 1635 by Youki Magosaburō I; and now Youki Magosaburō XII, Youkiza Marionette Theatre has enjoyed a history of 380 years. It was honoured as a national Important Intangible Folk-cultural Property and Intangible Cultural Property of Tokyo.

Its main repertoires are classical productions drawn from its jōruri repertory and new plays, magic lantern shows, and intercultural productions. Their experimental productions include actor-puppet performance, in which the puppeteer both manipulates puppets and performs as a character himself; the application of premodern puppetry techniques; and the insertion of Edo magic lantern visuals.
The theatre continually seeks to develop and combine new aspects to enhance their distinctive performance style.
In 2007, the Japan-France Theatre Collaboration of Jean Genet’s Les Paravents and two traditional plays by the Youkiza were invited to the Avignon Theatre Festival, one of the three most renowned world theatre festivals, and received accolades.
