The Long Thanh International Airport is expected to reduce the load on Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Works on the first phase Long Thanh International Airport project will begin on January 5, 2021 in the southern province of Dong Nai, according to Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The.

The transport minister also announced that the first items of construction will include fences, runway and auxiliary works in the first phase of the project.

Currently, the Dong Nai province People's Committee has handed over 1,600 out of 1,800 hectares to the investor for the first phase of the project.

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the major investor has completed the removal of unexploded ordnance and war leftovers.

“The progress of the first project has been basically on schedule and the plan is expected to be fulfilled  by 2025,” Mr. The said.

In the first phase of the project, sanctioned by the Government last November, a runway and a passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers, 1.2 million tons of cargo per year will be built. The estimated investment for the phase is more than VND109 trillion (US$4.6 billion).

The mega project is divided into four component projects, including: headquarters of state management agencies; flight management services; essential airport facilities and other works. The main works including airport buildings, aircraft parking, passenger terminals and cargo terminals will be built by the ACV, which operates 21 airports across the country.

The entire Long Thanh Airport, upon completion after three phases, would have four runways and four passenger terminals. It is designed to handle a capacity of 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year by 2040. Once fully operational, it will become a major international aviation hub in the region.
