Women and children’s happiness and safety to be targets of action: PM
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc called on businesses, individuals, social organizations and international organizations to partner with the Vietnamese government and the Vietnam Women`s Union in implementing the goals for women’s and children’s safety, gender equality and sustainable development.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc called on all levels to join hands with the Vietnam Women's Union to consider women and children’s happiness and safety targets of action when he attended the launching ceremony of the safety year for women and children in Hanoi on March 6.
Speaking at the ceremony, Phuc emphasized that Vietnam ratifed the convention on the rights for children on February 20, 1990, becoming the first country in Asia and the second country in the world to do so.
Currently, Vietnam has three female members of the Politburo (the country’s supreme decision making body), including a National Assembly chairwoman for the first time, and one of the ASEAN countries with the highest female leadership rate. In the field of business, Vietnam has the highest rate of businesswomen in Southeast Asia. Many women run the leading enterprises in Vietnam, creating a position and prestige in the international arena, Phuc cited.
He noted that the Vietnamese government has provided free health insurance to all children under six years old. Nearly 100% of under one-year-old children benefits from expanded vaccination. Nearly 100% of five-year-old children attended kindergarten. About 90% of children in special circumstances can enjoy social assistance policies.
The PM appreciated and supported the Vietnam Women's Union to select the theme of "Safe year for women and children" for 2019. This represents creativity and innovation in the union’s operation, demonstrates responsibility and determination in joining hands with the government to solve social issues to ensure safety for women and children.
Phuc stated that sustainable development must be based on all three pillars, including economy, society and environment. Besides, it is necessary to constantly improve people’s material and spiritual life.
The government leader also asked associations to build specific plans, select practical and suitable jobs for each target group, mobilize the participation of all levels, sectors and the whole society to protect women and children.
Ministries, agencies and localities must consider action plans and provide institutional, legal, and social security policies for women and children, he said.
Phuc also called on businesses, individuals, social organizations and international organizations to partner with the Vietnamese government and the Vietnam Women's Union in implementing the goals for women’s and children’s safety, gender equality and sustainable development.
At the ceremony, the PM and delegates texted messages to raise fund in support of women in border areas. This is a program organized by the Vietnam Women's Union and the Red Cross to mobilize resources to support women in border areas to develop their livelihoods, contributing to stabilizing security and defense.
