Village of producing incence toothpicks in Hanoi
The production of incence toothpicks, an extra job, has been familiar to farmers living in Quang Phu Cau ward, Ung Hoa district, Hanoi city for a long time. This craft is busy all year round, however, it creates a stable income for rural labourers.
Located along the Highway 21, Quang Phu Cau ward is still agricultural area. In the past time, the impacts of pest insects and water pollution have caused the ward's agricultural production more difficult.
Moreover, the income of farmers has been also somewhat diminished. However, local farrmers have an extra job - producing incence toothpicks - which has occurred for hundreds of years in Quang Phu Cau ward.
According to a farmer Khiem Thi Luyen in the ward, this job brings a significant income to local residents.
Mr Dang Van Nghiem, head of Phu Luong Thuong village said all villages in the Quang Phu Cau ward have participants making incence toothpicks, especially the Phu Luong Thuong village has the largest number.
Phu Luong Thuong village has over 400 households, most of them has involved in one of the stages of making incence toothpicks. It is a good job and not too strenuous, he added.
During the process of production, households always buy bamboo and then dry them. After that, producers use machine to turn these materials into incence toothpicks. "Our products are sold in wholesale to traders of provinces and cities across the country, being distributed in markets at home and abroad.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Phu Cau commune Le Van Diu said the production of incence toothpicks has made an important contribution to increasing income for local farmers.
He said that local residents expect to receive the city's supports in finance, technical production and marketing channels in building pilot incense production facilities, thus being a high-value economic model of the locality.
