Vietnam’s impressive agricultural achievements hailed by OECD
Vietnam`s economic reforms have brought impressive achievements in the country`s agricultural sector, as farm production more than tripled in the 1990-2013 period, increasing rural incomes, reducing poverty and sending agricultural exports growth.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a seminar in Hanoi on September 30 to discuss on the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Review of Agricultural Policies in Vietnam.
According to OECD Review of Agricultural Policies in Vietnam, the country’s agricultural reforms have reached impressive results over the past two decades.
The report underlined that Vietnam has quickly established its position in global agro-food markets, becoming the world's largest exporter of cashews and black pepper, the second largest exporter of coffee and cassava and the third largest exporter of rice and fisheries.
The report showed the “doi moi” (reform) programme launched in the mid-1980’s has helped spur the country’s production growth, reduce the proportion of undernourished people from 46% in 1990-1992 to just 13% in 2012-2014, one of the strongest improvements on the global scale.
Ken Ash, OECD Trade and Agriculture Director, said that Vietnam's economic reforms has made impressive achievements in its agricultural sector, increasing farm production over 3 times in the period 1990-2013, lifting income for farmers, reducing poverty, addressing food shortages and boosting agricultural exports.
Looking forward, Vietnam should work to build on these achievements while addressing long-term challenges posed by slower production growth rates, declining commodity prices and limited land for further expansion, the report said.
According to Ken Ash, Vietnam needs to improve its policy environment to attract investment funds to help the agricultural sector adapt to opportunities created by rising demand and the challenges of climate change and limited resources.
Speaking at the seminar, Tran Kim Long, the ministry's Head of Department of International Cooperation said that the report will help providing recommendations for policy makers to address agricultural challenges in the coming time.
