Maintaining an independent, self-reliant stance in foreign affairs is crucial.

Vietnam’s foreign policy will remain unchanged, and it will continue to build upon the achievements in foreign affairs that have been accomplished in recent times.

Newly elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and State President To Lam shared the view during a press briefing held today [August 3], shortly after being elected to the position at the 13th Party Central Committee’s conference earlier in the day.

To Lam stated that in his role as the President, during meetings with some international delegates, he shared that Vietnam's successful foreign policy and enhanced international standing and reputation could be attributed to several key points observed through practical governance.

In particular, To Lam noted that maintaining an independent, self-reliant stance in foreign affairs is crucial. The national interest is paramount, always protected and respected. He stressed that Vietnam does not rely on anyone and is not swayed by different international trends.

Vietnam seeks friendship with countries around the world, he said.

"The tradition of Vietnam is 'prosperity through friendship.' To develop, one must unite and increase the number of friends, which in turn increases strength, regardless of whether they are large or small countries, near or far. Through negotiations, diplomacy, and exchanges, we aim to align our interests more closely," emphasized To Lam.

He also affirmed that Vietnam holds responsibilities toward global politics, and the world economy, and actively contributes to human civilization.

Vietnam is actively involved in issues of international and regional peace, playing a responsible role in conflict resolution with a consistent policy of peace, cooperation, and solidarity.

"The direction of foreign policy remains unchanged," General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed, reiterating the principle of "unchanging response to changing conditions," harmony, and "using compassion to replace aggression," which has been a timeless tradition of the nation.

 Overview of the press conference.

Earlier during the press briefing, in response to a question about his feelings upon receiving his new responsibility, General Secretary and President To Lam expressed his gratitude for the support and congratulations he received.

He expressed his thanks to his comrades, fellow citizens, and international friends. Recognizing the Central Committee's trust in electing him as General Secretary, he acknowledged the enormous responsibility before the Party, the People, and the nation. He emphasized the need to achieve robust national development alongside the entire Party, the military, and the people.

In the face of rapid, complex developments and numerous challenges, he stressed the importance of exceptional effort, unity, and the collective endeavor of the Party, the military, and the people to achieve common goals.

"There is nothing like unity; it is our strength. I am delighted by the unity within the Party Central Committee and the Politburo, which has helped us overcome many difficulties and achieve the goals set by our Party," To Lam emphasized.

Addressing a question about the fight against corruption and negative behavior, To Lam acknowledged public anticipation, especially given the recent successes in this area under the Party's leadership. He affirmed that this work would continue vigorously, with the same objectives, principles, tasks, and solutions as before, aiming to combat corruption and negative behavior relentlessly, with no exceptions, regardless of who is involved.

"Resolute actions against internal enemies will be maintained," To Lam confirmed. He added that continuing the fight against corruption would involve administrative reforms and removing institutional and regulatory obstacles to create a new impetus and space for socio-economic development.

To Lam also reflected on his experience as Minister of Public Security and Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negative Behavior, stating that this background has prepared him well for his new responsibilities.

With the trust of the Party and the people's support in electing him as General Secretary and appointing him as Head of the Steering Committee, he is confident that this work will continue to thrive.

"I hope to receive the support and oversight of the entire political system, especially the people's endorsement and supervision, to ensure the success of this important work," To Lam concluded.
