According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (Vasep), Spain is still the leading country in Europe in terms of production, consumption and trade of frozen seafood. This is also the gateway which opens to many other markets in this area.
In the first quarter of 2022 (Q1), after more than three dismal years for pangasius exports to this market, the export value increased by 67.5%, reaching nearly US$4.9 million. Spain is the 4th largest export market of Vietnamese pangasius in the EU.
In Q1, there were about 20 Vietnamese pangasius enterprises exporting to Spain, the largest among them are C.P Vietnam JSC in Ben Tre, Navico and Vinh Hoan Corporation.
Since last month, Spain and the EU have imposed sanction measures on Russia over the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including banning white fish imports from Russia and prohibiting Russian ships from docking in EU ports.
As such, the EU's whitefish fishing industry is facing other difficulties including a surge in fuel oil prices and lack of shipping containers. Spain is the leading seafood trader of Europe and a wholesale market in this continent.
