This year, IDA was held at the Architecture and Design A+D Museum, in Los Angeles, the US. In addition, painter Thuy also won a consolation prize for her “Love Heart for Hanoi”, a heart-shaped sculpture decorated with millions of ceramic tiles, located by Truc Bach Lake in downtown Hanoi.
The two prizes are in the same “Society and Design for Environment” category at the IDA. The mural at Da Nang airport covers a pillar 7.4m in height and 6.4m in diameter, featuring images of flowers and tropical trees.
The work, made with paints produced by the French-based industrial paint producer Guard Industrie, was revealed in March this year, as the first painting as part of an art project to transform Da Nang airport into a tropical garden.
The project received high praise from the judges, for creatively and successfully incorporating materials used in building and industrial construction, into community arts. The use of flowers and green trees helps to create a fresh and environmentally-friendly feel for viewers, thus meeting the criteria set for the IDA’s Design for Society and Design for Environment category. Previously, Thuy was given an honourable mention at the eighth IDA in 2015 for her lotus-shaped fountain at Mai Xuan Thuong flower garden.
A handful of designers, thinkers and entrepreneurs created the International Design Awards in 2007 as a response to the lack of recognition and celebration for smart and sustainable multidisciplinary design. The International Design Awards (IDA) exists to recognize, celebrate and promote legendary design visionaries and to uncover emerging talent in Architecture, Interior, Product, Graphic, and Fashion Design.
In addition, IDA aspires to draw attention to the iconoclasm of design world wide, conceptualizing and producing great work. Farmani Group assembled IDA as the design sibling of the Annual Lucie Awards for Photography, which has emerged as one of the world's most prestigious photography awards.
This year’s competition attracted more than 1,000 entries, sent from architects and designers, from 52 countries throughout the world. Winners of this year’s event were honoured at a ceremony on June 10 at the A+D Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles.
