Deputy Minister Nguyen Huu Do stressed three outstanding achievements of Vietnam in this year’s Olympiad contests. The first is the gold medal and the “Best female student” title won by a contestant of the International Olympiad team of Physics.

Then comes the absolute score in the practice test at the International Chemistry Olympiad won by a male student who also bagged a gold medal, ranking 4th out of 300 contestants from 80 countries and territories.

The third achievement is the high number of winners from the provinces instead from the big cities as previous editions. Remarkably, a student from Yen Bai, a northern mountainous province of Vietnam, won silver medal in the International Chemistry Olympiad, bringing the first Opympiad medal for the province.

According to the deputy minister, in the coming year, Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training will keep promoting specialized schools, building high-quality schools and fostering outstanding students to compete in regional and international Olympiad contests.

Vietnamese contestants won two silvers and 10 bronze medals at the World Math-fusion Olympiad (WMO) 2019, which was held in Thailand on August 11.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Education and Training, all of the students are six graders at secondary schools in the city. The two silver medalists were Nguyen Minh Tri and Huynh Minh Dat from Tran Dai Nghia School for the Gifted.

This year’s event was attended by nearly 200 students from more than 10 countries including China, Australia, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, among others.

The 12 excellent students who participated in this year's final round were recruited and fostered from nearly 1,000 students in Ho Chi Minh City.

Previously, the students were selected thanks to their outstanding results among more than 500 contestants participating at the national qualification round held at the end of June by the department and the EMG Education company.

The WMO is an international mathematics contest which is held annually for students aged between 8 and 13 with a view to promoting international exchange among math gifted students and establishing a math-based innovative education paradigm.

WMO focuses on creativity, teamwork ability, intuitive thinking reasoning and problem-solving ability, especially integrating mathematical knowledge with students' ability to apply science and technology.
