Vietnamese doctors successfully perform simultaneous organ transplants

This is the first time Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital has performed a lung transplant technique from brain-dead donor and it is also the first time that Vietnam has implemented six complicated organs simultaneously.

For the first time in Vietnam, Vietnamese doctors successfully conducted five organ transplants at the same time from one brain dead donor.

Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital conducted the operation for four patients and Nhi Dong 2 Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City performed a kidney transplant to a 15-year-old patient.

Prof.Dr.Tran Binh Giang, director of Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital in Hanoi, said the multi-organ donor is a male patient (40 years old, in Ninh Binh province) with a healthy body but his brain was dead due to unrecoverable cerebral aneurysm.

The lung-transplant patient is a 17-year-old boy. This patient was transferred from Bach Mai Hospital to Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital in a very severe condition, continuous oxygen breathing and malnutrition.

In order to perform a complicated surgery of taking out multiple organs (heart, lungs, liver and kidney), Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital mobilized nearly 500 doctors. Five operating rooms were used for the transplants in two days (December 12-13).

Then, the kidney was sent to Ho Chi Minh City to be transplanted to the patient in Nhi Dong 2 Hospital. The kidney from the 43-year-old donor was air-transported from Hanoi on December 12 and the operation was conducted at 21:00 the same day.

Patient D.V.H from Lam Dong province, who suffers from end-stage kidney failure and is being treated at Nhi Dong 2 Hospital, is the first child patient in Vietnam to receive a kidney from a brain-dead donor.

On December 24, the child patient is in stable conditions and is able to urinate 4 liters of urine a day. Doctors said he can return to school in six months.

Doctors at Nhi Dong 2 Hospital said the successful use of an organ from a brain-dead donor for a child patient opens up opportunities to save the lives of many children suffering from fatal diseases. Vietnam’s law does not allow the donation of viscera of under-18 children.

Prof. Tran Binh Giang said that this is the first time Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital has performed a lung transplant technique from brain-dead donor and it is also the first time that Vietnam has implemented six complicated organs simultaneously.

Giang added that he intended to ask for support from international colleagues. However, he then decided to mobilize the doctors who are studying at international transplant centers to perform the surgery. All preparation and treatment were performed by Vietnamese experts.
