In the first day of the 2017 Asian Cadet Taekwondo Poomsae Championship, three young athlete, including Le Ngoc Han - Nguyen Kim Phuong and Nguyen Thi Minh Anh from Vietnam's southern Vinh Long province won two gold medals.
According to Coach Nguyen Thanh Huy of Vietnam, looking at the recent world beach championship and taking lessons from the first edition of the championship, Vietnam team can definitely achieve their target.
This year, South Korea, the native country of taekwondo, is not taking part in the poomsae, so Coach of Vietnam believe that his athletes could grab more gold medals, especially in the poomsae’s standard style.
In Addition, 12-year-old Sang is one of Vietnam’s gold medal hopes at the tournament, which will be open to fans free of cost at the Military Zone 7 Gymnasium till June 8. “I am excitedly waiting for the tournament to start. I am working hard to prepare for my performance. I hope to get the highest result on home turf,” said young athlete Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang of Vietnam team.
There are nearly 180 athletes competing in 20 classes of kyorugi (combat) event, while more than 100 will compete in nine poomsae (performance) disciplines. In the first edition in Chinese Taipei in 2015, Vietnam won one gold and two silver medals in the kyorugi and two gold, one silver and two bronze in the poomsae.
The athletes aged 12 - 14 from Afghanistan, China, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries and regions are competing at kyorugi (combat) events, and poomsae (performance) disciplines.
The two tournaments will wrap up on this Friday June 8.
