Vietnam welcomes 1.5 million foreign visitors in January
Vietnam aims to receive about 18 million foreign visitors and 85 million domestic ones in 2019, and earn more than VND700 trillion (US$30.2 billion) from tourism, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Vietnam received 1.5 million foreign visitors in January, a year-on-year increase of 5%, according to the General Statistics Office.
Arrivals by road, air in the reviewed period recorded on-year increases of 26.9% and 1.4%, respectively, while growth was also seen in the number of visitors from all five continents.
In January, increases were recorded in the number of holidaymakers from most markets, particularly Thailand (39.7%), Taiwan (China) (31.4%), South Korea (23%), the Philippines (20%), Japan (11.3%) and Malaysia (9.4%).
The number of visitors increased this month because of two main reasons. Firstly, overseas Vietnamese are coming to Vietnam for Tet (Lunar New Year). Secondly, for countries in Europe, the US and Australia, January is winter holiday season, leading to a higher demand in travelling abroad.
