Vietnam - US universities promoting scientific research cooperation
The Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Washington DC, towards promoting scientific research cooperation.

Under the agreement, the two universities will enhance the exchange of lecturers, scholars, and managers in the fields of education and scientific research. They will also work together on developing joint research programmes related to biomedical science and stem cell and seeking research funding from their Governments and private resources.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Director of the VNUHCM Huynh Thanh Dat stressed VNUHCM’s commitment to long-term collaboration with UCLA, expressing his hope that this will contribute to Vietnam’s education reform.
For his part, Professor Gene Block, Director of the UCLA said he believes the MoU will help promote more effective collaboration, especially in the fields of their common concern.
Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan expressed his hope for effective cooperation and support between the two universities in the mentioned fields.
He suggested the two sides consider a partnership in researching the application of artificial intelligence (robot) in remote diagnosis of serious diseases, especially cancer.
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public research university in the Westwood district of Los Angeles, United States. It became the Southern Branch of the University of California in 1919, making it the second-oldest undergraduate campus of the ten-campus University of California system.
It offers 337 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. UCLA enrolls about 31,000 undergraduate and 13,000 graduate students and had 119,000 applicants for Fall 2016, including transfer applicants, the most applicants for any American university.
The university is organized into six undergraduate colleges, seven professional schools, and four professional health science schools. The undergraduate colleges are the College of Letters and Science; Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS); School of the Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; School of Theater, Film, and Television; and School of Nursing.
The same day, Nhan and the Ho Chi Minh City delegation had a working session with representatives from McCain Institute under the Arizona State University (ASU), during which they agreed on a cooperation programme to help Ho Chi Minh City solve its traffic problems.
