Vietnam spends over US$1.6 billion importing cars

Thailand and Indonesia continued to be Vietnam’s main car import markets to date, notably 52,170 cars were bought from Thailand worth US$1.04 billion.
Vietnam imported 72,650 cars worth over US$1.64 billion year to December 13, down nearly 20% in quantity and 21% in value year-on-year, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC).

Thailand and Indonesia continued to be Vietnam’s main car import markets to date, notably 52,170 cars were bought from Thailand worth US$1.04 billion.

According to the GDVC, Vietnam imported 2,833 cars worth US$67 million from December 7 to 13, down 601 in quantity week-on-week.

Under-nine-seat cars made up the largest proportion with 2,056 units for US$44 million, for which the average unit price amounted to US$21,250, excluding taxes. 

During the period, Vietnam mainly imported under-nine-seat cars from Thailand with 1,059 cars, Indonesia 759 and Japan 105, while over-nine-seat cars were 69, trucks 615 and specialized cars 93.

Overall during the week, Vietnam bought 1,592 cars from Thailand, 869 cars from Japan and 118 from Indonesia. These three markets combined make up 91% of the total car imports in  Vietnam.  

Vietnam also imported accessories and parts worth US$63 million last week, down 1.1% week-on-week,  mainly from Thailand with US$16.2 million, Japan with US$13.1 million, South Korea with US$11.3 million, China with US$9.1 million, India with US$4.5 million, and Indonesia with US$3.9 million. 

Overall, accessories and parts from these six countries accounted for 93% of total imported value in the week.
