Vietnam shares gender equality experience at UNHRC
Hanoitimes 08:46, 2014/06/19
Vietnam has pledged to promote and share experience in gender equality and advancement of women’s rights at meeting of the 26th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

From June 16-17, many important activities related to gender equality were carried out during the 26th session, including speeches from special rapporteurs on the right to education and anti-discrimination against women, high-level meetings on various women’s rights topics, such as women and sustainable development and elimination of bad practices against African women.

At a seminar on June 16 to discuss the right to education and combating discrimination against women, Vietnam’s Head of permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Nguyen Trung Thanh praised the efforts and contributions made by the rapporteurs, UN agencies and the international community.

The Ambassador called on countries and the international community to pay more attention to the right to education, universalization of education, gender equality and the advancement of women. He also emphasized the importance of sharing the views of each country responsible for making policies for the education system and gender equality, in accordance with practices, languages, cultural values, standards and international practices in the field.

“Vietnam has always attached great importance to education, considering it a fundamental basis on which to boost social development. The nation has implemented policies and measures to develop education and support poor students. Despite still being a relatively poor country, Vietnam has made significant achievements in education with high rates of primary and junior high school education universalization.

Speaking at a high-level discussion on women and sustainable development on June 17, Ambassador Thanh shared Vietnam’s experiences in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including priorities for early completion of gender equality goals.

Vietnam has focused on integrating gender equality into socio-economic development programmes. Through its experience, Vietnam said that in order to help the international community discuss, develop and implement the agenda on sustainable development, including ensuring and promoting gender equality and women's rights, women need to be empowered and provided with favourable conditions for their full participation in this process.
