Vietnam-Russia relations continue to strengthen: Putin

The Russian leader expressed his condolences for the severe damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam.

President Vladimir Putin in a meeting with National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on September 10 praised the latter’s visit to Russia and urged stronger parliamentary cooperation to effectively develop the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership effectively.

At the meeting, Man discussed the results of his visit and potential cooperation between the two countries and their parliaments with Putin.

For his part, Putin praised the significance and outcomes of the visit and urged both legislative bodies to enhance parliamentary collaboration and further strengthen bilateral relations.

Putin also invited General Secretary and President To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to visit Russia at a suitable time.

According to a Kremlin statement, the Russian leader expressed his condolences for the severe damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam. In June, Putin made a state visit to Vietnam, the only Southeast Asian country he has visited six times. Both sides regularly exchange high-level delegations and hold phone discussions.

 Overview of the meeting. 

On September 10, Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with leaders of several major Russian political parties, including Gennady Zyuganov, Chairman of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, and Sergey Mironov, Chairman of the Fair Russia Party. He also held meetings with prominent Russian business leaders, such as Gazprom Vice Chairman Vitaly Markelov and Novatek Chairman Leonid Mikhelson, as well as representatives of the Vietnamese business community in Russia, the Russia-Vietnam Friendship Association, and the Russian Veterans Association.

Man's official visit to Russia took place from September 8-10, at the invitation of  Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma, and Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council.

This was Chairman Tran Thanh Man's first overseas trip in his new role and the first visit to Russia by a senior Vietnamese leader in 2024.
