Vietnam raises voice on possibility of the US joining CPTPP
The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is an open trade deal, as described by Foreign Ministry of Vietnam.
Le Thi Thu Hang, Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson underscored the openness of CPTPP during a regular press conference on April 19, as questioned over Vietnam’s reaction with US President’s recent remarks that the country would rejoin the pact.
"All nations are welcomed to participate the CPTPP, as long as it was based upon agreement to the high standards set in the treaty and consent from other member countries,” Hang stressed.
This year, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed the likelihood that US may come back to the Pacific Asia pact, which he signed away upon taking office in 2017.
President Donald Trump first announced his readiness to reopen trade talks on the deal at World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January. He then suggested the similar move during a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Most recently, Trump has asked Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative to study the phasibilty of re-entering the trade pact negotiations.
CPTPP, the revised version of the TPP will reduce tariffs in 11 economies which covers a market of nearly 500 million people. In the absence of the US, it has been renamed as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on the sidelines of the 2017 APEC Summit in Da Nang, Vietnam and inked recently on March 8 by the eleven members.
