Vietnam pledges to promote dialogues and cooperation when chairing ASEAN
ASEAN has undeniably become a key factor for the region’s peace, stability, cooperation, and development, and is enjoying extensive relations with various partners, especially major powers.
Vietnam will join hands with other ASEAN states to further promote dialogues and cooperation when the country takes on the ASEAN chairmanship in 2020, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Quoc Dung while addressing the flag-hoisting ceremony to mark the 52nd anniversary of the association in Hanoi on August 8.
The ceremony saw the attendance of ambassadors and chargé d’affairs of ASEAN member states, and Venezuelan Ambassador to Vietnam Jorge Rondón Uzcátegui, who is dean of the diplomatic corps in Hanoi.
Dung stressed that ASEAN, which stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, has overcome multiple challenges and emerged into a strong and resilient community with all 10 Southeast Asian countries as members.
ASEAN has undeniably become a key factor for the region’s peace, stability, cooperation, and development, and is enjoying extensive relations with various partners, especially major powers. This has brought about significant and tangible benefits to every state members.
Dung also reviewed some significant milestones in the bloc’s journey with several agreements signed including the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), ASIAN Charter and ASEAN Community resting on three pillars, namely the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC).
These agreements have proven ASEAN’s consistent aspirations and determination to maintain peace and promote sustainable development towards “an inclusive, rules-based, people-oriented and people-centered community”.
In 2019, under the theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”, ASEAN continues its efforts to promote sustainability across all the three pillars of the Community.
“We wish to receive the continued support and cooperation of all ASEAN friends and other regional and international partners and friends to make even greater contributions to building a peaceful, stable, prosperous, people-centered and people-oriented ASEAN Community”, Dung said.
