Vietnam launches biggest-ever population census for better planning

This will be the fifth population census in the country, costing an estimated US$47.2 million.
Vietnam kicked off a national population and housing census on April 1, 2019 to make it the biggest poll after a decade, serving as a basis for making socio-economic plans in the 2021-2030 period.

The General Statistics Office (GSO) will conduct the program in 25 days with a team of 122,000 surveyors to collect data on population and housing to serve the research and policy making. It will involve 26.2 million households and over 94 million people. 

This will be the fifth population census in the country, costing an estimated VND1.1 trillion (US$47.2 million), according to VnExpress. Advanced information technology will be used at all phases of the ongoing census. 

The census will cover a wide range of population, immigration, birth rates, death rates, employment and jobs, marital status, housing, and knowledge among others. 

The preliminary results will be announced in July and the final findings will be made public in the second quarter next year. 

Head of the GSO Nguyen Bich Lam said that the census is crucial for the research and analysis of development of the population and housing throughout the country, assessment of the country’s socio-economic development in 2011-2020 and the making of strategies until 2030. 

Nguyen Doan Toan, vice chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee and head of the Steering Committee for the Population and Housing Census of Hanoi, Hanoi is one of two cities with the largest number of surveying units, with about 2.2 million households divided into 17,800 enumeration areas. 

To carry out this work, the city has trained more than 12,000 surveyors to conduct direct interviews and collect information at each of these households. The data will be collected via electronic devices.
